The Failure of Victorious - Quinton Reviews

This is actually part 3 of a loooong series to cover everything that ties into iCarly. Quinton has become a reviewer that I've come across and enjoyed for his deep dives into these particular topics even when I'm not a fan of the subject; just like Victorious. He covers all the seasons of iCarly and this particular review goes over most of Victorious. You can tell he's really taken to and overanalyzed each character to describe them in such an entertaining manner that I truly was engaged for all 5 1/2 hours. If you can handle the commitment, or put it in portions, I recommend it for fans and casuals alike.

The Best Isekai that's Getting Better: Mushoku Tensei - Manime Matt

Mushoku Tensei is a phenomenal show. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk... Honestly, this short impressions video of season 2 covers everything I need to say. The different points that Matt conveys prove that this show really has set itself apart from many shows in this overpopulated scene relying on this premise. It's been one of my favorite shows to watch this season, which isn't much, to be frank, and the preceding video explains why.

Favorite Music Video
Smokin out the Window - Silk Sonic

Do I really have to explain? This song and video really put the talents and humorous personalities of both Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak, in center stage. We got the Hooligans showing up and showing out with the choreo and background vocals, as well as you lovely ladies, of course. Plus the night I watched it premiere, I got sad because they made it look so easy. So not to be dramatic, but I wanted to die knowing I could never measure. If you haven't heard this, you've must've been comatose. ENJOY!

Favorite Debut
Billlie

Billlie has been an astounding group to watch during their debut. The mini album is top-tier goodness that is varied in sound, rich in vocals, and iconic in raps. The concept is extremely intriguing and almost confusing (which adds to the allure, by wanting to figure it out.) Above is the dance practice video to the title track, "Ring x Ring". In it, you can see the incredible details they execute to keep a feast for the eyes similar to a buffet. "Flipp!ng a Coin" has become one of my favorite hype jams of the year, also with superb choreo. Then "The Eleventh Day" has the smoothest listen with its lofi R&B vibe on maximum. Now, I just can't wait to see how they do adding Sheon to the following comebacks!

Hula Hoop - LOONA

This month had a lot of great videos which you'll see in the full favorites playlist. Though, the one I wanted to highlight here would have to be LOONA's Japanese debut MV. (Pixy's "Addicted" was a extremely close second, by the way.) In this music video that was finally released about a month after the song was initially available, we get an extremely cool vertically scrolling video. The concept was really captivating to me along with the bright and interesting color grading. Plus for all us Orbits, there are mountains of Easter eggs throughout the entire watch. Ever since release, the song randomly pops into my mind, so this is my attempt to do the same to you. Say it with me: "Hula-la-la, hula-la-la, hula-la hula hoop!"

This is the Most Important Instrument in the World - 12Tone

As many of you know, I love channels that go into the music theory into...well, modern music. 12Tone is one that I would stop by on occasion, but I finally subscribed recently and this particular video was published. It made me happy with my decision to stay up to date. The topic of the video is something that I've always believed for many years, but to have someone breakdown technically how I feel about this instrument is so affirming. Maybe after giving this a watch, you'll voice the same opinion as I do. *wink*

You're Gonna Carry That Weight - Ladyknightthebrave

There's been so many video essays on this classic anime that you think there wouldn't be anything more entertainment to get from them. Lady Knight has proven that notion incorrect with this piece on Cowboy Bebop. What interested me most was the approach to the review. She not only talked much about how the show itself was to her, but also elaborated on the background on the creators of the work and, namely, Shinichiro Watanabe's common themes through the years. Another aspect that I saw that hasn't been explored much was the depiction of trans and nonbinary characters in his projects, including Cowboy Bebop. It's always fascinating to hear other people's opinions on works of art I enjoy to expand my perspective on them, and for an enduring work like this to still have new things to discover or ponder on is something I have Lady Knight for unearthing for me. Hopefully, it can do the same for you!

Quick Movie Review

Drunken Master (1978, USA) | Rating: 3.5/5

This was another timely Patron request from Norma for Asian Heritage Month. I swear I'm gonna get better at these. Like most uncultured viewers of Jackie Chan films, I have yet to watch any of his earlier work before moving onto the Hollywood scene. It's nice to know that he was always a comedic martial arts actor. For the most part, I really enjoyed this movie! It was very entertaining and I was extremely mesmerized by every fight scene that took place. My only complaint is that I wish I could've found the original Chinese audio. I know people enjoy the ridiculous English dubbing that doesn't match the lip movement, but when I started I had the subtitles on and they didn't match the audio. It was just distracting for me. So, a lot of the time I tried to ignore that factor in my plans of reviewing this movie. The English is funny, just off putting for someone who doesn't really watch live action movies dubbed.

The Mummy (2017, USA) | Rating: 1.5/5

This was another studio effort to create the Universal Monster universe...and in short, this one definitely failed. I really like Sofia Boutella and I honestly enjoyed watching her be the new mummy. I think she did the best she could with the script that was given to her...and I'm sure that was a major challenge. The script was not good at all. Much like Justice League, it was too busy trying to set up future movies than have a clear focus. Not only did we have Tom Cruise's character dealing with the mummy, but we had a Jekyll/Hyde subplot going on. I don't know what the future is going to be with the Universal Monsters, but they've definitely had more failed attempts than successes, which I'll touch on again in my Invisible Man review.

47 Meters Down (2017, USA) | Rating: 2/5

It's a shark movie. I'm a little indifferent towards shark movies. They're fine, but most of them don't really wow me. I know this movie is enjoyed by many, but I vaguely remember being quite bored with this movie. It definitely has a slow pace, which normally doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't feel slow. I know there are fans of this movie, otherwise there wouldn't be a sequel, but obviously this movie wasn't for me. It wasn't terrible or anything, but I guess I wish there was just a little bit more action or personality with the characters.

The Glass Coffin (2016, Spain) | Rating: 2.5/5

This was a movie I streamed in the ye olde days of Rabb.it. [R.I.P.] It was not what I thought it was gonna be, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. The movie plays out with a mysterious caller instructing our unsuspecting victim to complete certain tasks and...that's about it. Yeah, I really wish I wrote this the year I saw it because according to IMDb, I didn't score this movie very well for some reason. I'm sure if I watch it now, my feelings most likely will stay the same, but I can't honestly tell you what was wrong with the movie. Perhaps it was the pacing or the conclusion. Nonetheless, what I can remember is that this movie definitely has promise.

Baskin (2015, Turkey) | Rating: 2.5/5

This was another movie I remember streaming on Rabb.it; perhaps it was a double feature with Glass Coffin. *shrugs* I strangely remember this one...granted I watched someone else's review of it recently too. This was a very strange movie and I also didn't expect it to go the direction that it did. At first, I wasn't sure about this movie as it follows a group of men in a van in search of...something, but they end up underground with these odd human-like creatures and some disturbing stuff happens. Yeah, this movie definitely made me raise a brow. I haven't experienced much Turkish horror, if any at all, but this was definitely an experience and not one for the fate of heart.

The Addams Family (2019, USA) | Rating: 3/5

I was surprised to learn in 2019 that the iconic Addams Family was returning to the big screen, but in an animated form. At first, I was kinda critical of the art direction for the character designs, but learned that the animators took influence from their original animated/sketches. Nonetheless, I wasn't planning on making a special trip to the theater to see another cartoon stuffed with dated pop culture jokes and music with a sprinkle of potty humor. I admit that this movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I don't see myself returning to this version of the Addams'. It's cool to have a kinda dark, but humorous cartoon for kids like I had in my youth ala Courage the Cowardly Dog or Invader Zim (among other 1990s and early 2000s animated series). Personally, I'm content watching the live action movies and even dabbling with the television series. Apparently, I'm assuming, this movie must've made some sort of success for it to gain a sequel, which I will check out on DVD.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009, Netherlands) | Rating: 3/5

I think this was shown in last year's Halloween Horror Endurance Run or just a regular October stream. I admit I like to challenge myself with these disturbing movies to see if they truly live up to the hype and this movie, among a few others, have been lingering in the back of my mind to tackle one day. So, after watching it, I can understand how it can be disturbing and why it gained some sort of cult following. I personally didn't think it was that disturbing, but moreso on the disgusting end of things. For the most part, I had a few questions, which were later answered by a friend who's a fan of the director Tom Six: 1. How did he come up with such a concept? 2. Why did the main character want to make a human centipede in the first place? 3. Who gave this man money to make this movie and its 2 sequels? Strangely enough after watching this gross little flick, I was a little tempted to check out the Second Sequence and perhaps even the Third. I doubt I would stream something like this again for the public, but the jury is still out for exploring the rest of the franchise.

Greta (2019, USA) | Rating: 3.5/5

Despite this concept kinda being done before, I was still intrigued enough to see this in the theater and again on DVD. It's one of those stories where there's something not right about the antagonist and it all ties back to some personal tradegy that gets the protagonist all wrapped up into trouble. One fascinating thing I enjoyed while watching this movie is how Chloë Grace Moretz has slowly spread her wings into various genres in her cinema career. As I said before, this concept is nothing new in the suspense/thriller genre, but it was still entertaining watching how things would unfold for our characters. I thought it was definitely one of the better crazy old lady films, but for sure not the best either.

Host (2020, UK) | Rating: 3/5

Not to be confused by the Stephanie Meyer's film adaptation or the South Korean monster flick. This Shudder exclusive made its way to the shelves of my workplace for me to check out, after hearing about it from Nightmare Maven. It was only appropriate to make a horror movie through Zoom, since most people are heavily using the FaceTime software during the pandemic. There were also similar screen sharing horror/thrillers that were successful in Unfriended and Searching, so why not give it a different paranormal spin. The first time I watched it, I became increasingly restless and disinterested in the characters presented me. Upon the second watch through, I gave the movie a little more of my attention and...I found it to be a decent watch. I wasn't completely blown away, but I was impressed that these group of people were able to film a paranormal movie apart from each other. The movie did offer some genuinely creepy and suspenseful moments during this silly seneance. I'm glad I gave it another chance, because I did enjoy it a little more the second go round.

Megan is Missing (2011, USA) | Rating: 1.5/5

Along with the previous movie, this entry was part of one of the many movie challenges I undertook on Letterboxd. [Feel free to follow me there!] I have seen this on a few most disturbing movie lists, but definitely not as much as Human Centipede and other titles I'll be mentioning later on this blog. I skimmed through some of the comments on the site and I was amused by some such as one user being more startled by their boyfriend breaking the silence with a fart and another user being bored by the 15 minutes of the killer digging a hole. From the very start of this movie, when Amy and Megan introduce themselves, I knew I would hate this movie. It is incredibly important to like your main characters in this kind of movie. We have a child predator for Christ's sake! As the movie went on, I could not wait until Amy and Megan disappeared and that's saying something. Now there are definitely some disturbing parts in the movie in the thirdish act, but the pacing comes to a sudden halt during that 15 minute digging scene (and yes, I paid attention to the time). Overall as a movie, I did not like it one bit. From the jump off in the introduction, my feelings proved true. Despite its glaring flaws and pushing aside my strong negative feelings, I can give a small kudo for kinda adding a little something to the found footage genre.

Favorite Interview
Daniel "Obi" Klein & Charli Taft - ReacttotheK

I always love these interviews with the producers and songwriters of kpop. It's a world that I would love to get involved with, being a songwriter myself. Yet while watching most of these, I realize that I completely lack the talent and drive to do so at a level that these artists do. These two are great examples and their catalog with some of my favorite groups just prove that. Check out the interesting stories of how they got involved in the music industry and eventually on the kpop side of things.

Favorite Debut Song
Got'ya - IChillin

Without a doubt, this song is one I've been obsessed with since release. The production, the choreography, the vocals, the rapping, the charismatic performance all culminates in my fandom. They killed everything and I went at length on this on one of my Patreon reactions to the performance video. How can you not find this super infectious? You know!

Favorite Comeback
4 Only - Lee Hi

I. AM. LATE!!! This album had soooo many fantastic tunes to jam from beginning to end. My favorite being the above shared song, H.S.K.T. Lee Hi has such a soulful approach to her music that oozes cool and ultimate vibes. Yeah, so I get why so many people get into kr&b, especially acts like Lee Hi when all you have to do is press play and settle into the mood. I'm most surely going to be doing a deep dive into her discography after this. How about you?

Favorite Music Video
Pressure - Krizz Kaliko

Symbolism. It's super simple in this video, but powerful. Krizz Kaliko has been on a roll ever since his separation from Strange Music and launching his own label, Earhouse. This song is another strong showing of what he is still capable of without such a huge independent label behind him. The song and video really shows exactly the perfect sentiment to make you understand the main theme. Life has many pressures that you feel you need to keep dragging along with you, but you should allow yourself the freedom to enjoy the ones you're doing work for.

Quick Anime Review

Lu Over the Wall (2017) | Rating: 3.5/5

Every now and then my job receives an anime movie that I've never heard of that sounds intriguing and this was one of them. It took me a little while to get used to this unique art style, but as time went on I've coincidentally seen more Masaaki Yuasa movies and I've grown accostumed to his distinct animation style. This film is about a boy and his band that find a very strange fish-like girl who is intrigued by their music. She soon becomes part of their musical endeavors, but things began to shift in their little town. I...enjoyed this movie! It was fun, humoruous, and the music was kinda catchy. I enjoyed the character interactions, the merfolk lore around the town, and the adventures the cast had to go through to set things right. This is a great watch for families with small kids, because it is very vivid and the music is pretty good. Of course, anyone of any age can enjoy this movie.

The Promised Neverland (2019) | Rating: 4/5

I know TheAnimeMan had a few issues with this show and I can't really respond to those thoughts as I've not read the manga...yet, but what I can say is that I really, really enjoyed this series! I acknowledge that this has a problematic character in it and many people have pointed out that Sister Krone has not aged well. When she did pop up, I did have a not so favorable reaction to her, but continued onward with this horrific story. I absolutely enjoyed this anime! It seems like horror stories are few and far between and this one is definitely a gem. From the characters to the twist and turns in the story, I was easily hooked. When I saw it got renewed for a second season [no surprise there], I was very excited, but now hearing that it's not so great...I'm being cautious with my excitement. Nonetheless, I will be watching it and even jump into the manga series later.

Violet Evergarden (2018) | Rating: 5/5

I can confidently say that many anime fans had this series as their favorite in 2018. The animation was breathtaking, the characters and story are well written, and the soundtrack really pushed that emotional button extra hard. I'm not much of a cryer, but there were definitely an episode or two I watched at work that almost got me sobbing in public...even when I knew what was about to happen. It was truly a breath of fresh air to see such a modern masterpiece among the usual suspects in the anime sphere sweep fans away with top tier quality. I am very much looking forward to delving into the movie!

Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom? (2017) | Rating: 2.5/5

I'm not sure if this is one movie I streamed on Discord or something that was about to leave Hoopla. There was definitely a reason I pushed forward to see this earlier than I wanted and I'm kinda glad I got this out of the way. I mostly heard about this movie when it had a limited release in theaters. At the time, I was a novice to seeking out anime in theater and, honestly, the story wasn't super interesting to me. I believe there were moderate comments about the movie and I mostly agree. This wasn't anything special to run to the theaters for, but it was a decent summer season watch.

If it's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord (2019) | Rating: 2.5/5

I want to say that this was a challenge entry from last year. This usually wouldn't be something I would watch, but I think a YouTuber I'm subscribed to mentioned this series and made it sound worth my time. Initially, I thought it was another fantasy isekai, but it wasn't. It was a mostly wholesome fantasy adventure with a demon girl and a traveler who adopts her. I must admit this anime has a lot of charm and sweetness. There were moments where I wanted to reach into the screen and hug Latina; my heart really went out to her. By the end of the series, I felt a bit unsatisfied and a little disappointed. The show definitely had a lot of potential to be better, but it definitely wasn't that bad for sure!

Quick Anime Review

Weathering with You (2019) | Rating: 3.5/5

Between this movie and Your Name, I've heard so many high praises and perhaps even comparisons. I watched this movie with my anime club while we were working from home. One thing that stood out the most for me (and some of the club members) was the animation. Oh my God! It was just so vibrant and colorful and bold! It's just amazing how far anime has come over the years. The story was a very interesting one. Plenty of good humor, flashy action, and fantastical elements to keep you immersed. Oh, and there were some emotional moments as well. As much as I enjoy it, I probably won't be running towards that hype train over this movie, but I do understand for sure. It's definitely worth your time and honestly, I wouldn't mind watching it again either.

School Days (2007) | Rating: 2/5

This infamous anime was chosen for last year's anime challenge. I knew going into it that many anime fans hate this series and how the show was going to end. Pushing aside the negative reviews, I dove in and immediately hated all the main characters. There's so many unrealistic decisions made regarding the main character's behaviors. Katsura and Saionji, ladies, get it together! Makoto is not worth all this emotional damage. Of course, I don't feel sorry for him either at the end. Honestly, I rather enjoyed that shocking conclusion (if I didn't already know what it was). Learning that this was based on a visual novel made a lot of sense with the female characters' motivations and behaviors...and also Makoto's bland personality. For my own amusement, I did watch School Days: Valentine Days, which was just a bunch of fanservice, and School Days: Magical Heart Kokoro-chan, which turned the main characters into magical heroes. Take heed, anime trash diggers, this one is definitely an infuriating ride.

Promare (2019) | Rating: 3.5/5

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill have left quite a significant mark in the anime community that it had caused much hype for this movie. Before the end times, I remember some of friends shouting their praises for this movie after seeing it in the theater and a couple of them even when to see it for a second, perhaps third, time. I probably had a chance to indulge in the theater experience, but at the time, I had not seen Kill la Kill and was only mildly interested in checking it out. Seeing it at home, I had no regrets. The animation was fantastic and the story was action packed and left me wanting more. Fortunately, there are a couple character centric extras that I plan on divulging in, but for the most part, I understand why fans enjoyed this movie. While I'm not shouting my praises on the mountaintop, it does make me excited to check out the team's previous work in "Gurren Lagann".

One Punch Man (2015) | Rating: 3/5

Another entry from last year's anime challenge. I've heard some pretty great things about the first season and some not so great things about the animation in the second season. I tried not to hype it up too much for myself as I really do enjoy the manga series. It's such an easy read and the characters are very entertaining. I thought with a premise with such an overpowered main character the schtick would get boring, but it doesn't. Unfortunately for the anime, I wasn't as super into it as I was reading the manga. I don't know if it's because I didn't put my full focus on it while it was playing or something was truly missing. Despite the negative comments, I'm still willing to dive into the second season in the near future.

Blood-C (2011) | Rating: 3/5

This one was from the current anime challenge I'm working on. I thought the premise was interesting and I liked the main character quite a bit. Unfortunately, the execution wasn't great. There were definitely some flaws when they were trying to reveal the big twist. Despite how it was presented, I was still interested in seeing how things concluded for Saya Kisaragi. I feel like that's the story's saving grace is that I did attach myself to these characters and the story was entertaining enough for me to move forward.
