Favorite Live Performance
Kick Push - Lupe Fiasco x Nu Deco Ensemble

Lupe Fiasco really is a phenomenal lyricist and performer. The fact that we got to hear him with this classic song with a live orchestra is such a treat. If you love good storytelling and fantastic musicians, I don't know what else to tell you but to give this a watch! Honestly, the vibe is immaculate with them playing the beautiful strings of the sample in the original production and the mastery of breath control of Lupe on display. It's great to see more and more hip hop artists getting the chance to show that they are just as virtuosic as classically trained musicians and it's a craft to be respected. Please enjoy!

The Sound That Took Over Pop - As Told By JP

This was a really fun find that the algorithm sent my way. This lovely video essay chronicles the time period where R&B's influence and producers slowly proliferated the pop industry through the late 90's and 00's. It was a neat deep dive in how things eventually became more and more akin to the trends that started in the hits in R&B. There was no denying that the lines continued to blur increasingly during that time where the genres began and ended which was clearly due to how the producers of the time were allowed to have their feet planted across both sides of the industry. Check out this cool breakdown for more details.

Favorite Interview
NE-YO - Zach Sang Show

Speaking of R&B, one of the greats in the late 00's and 10's came through on the Zach Sang Show recently. I thought it would be interesting to see how Zach would approach this interview since I don't see a lot of R&B artists on his platform. Though, the major crossover appeal of his music worked in his favor since he was able to dig into many of the hits in his 20+ years in the industry. NE-YO also is just an interesting person to learn more about in general and it made for an intriguing interview overall. I think it's a one to watch to learn more about the prolific songwriter.

Favorite Dance Performance
It's Morphkin Time - The Kinjaz

Man, I feel like it's been ages since I've gotten to share purely a dance video. Kinjaz, man, always come through with some amazing moves! They sometimes like to do it with style too. This time they do it with comedy! Growing up on Power Rangers made this a super fun and nostalgic watch. Yet, as usual, the Kinjaz were able to never skip out on flawless technique and fun grooves for the audience to enjoy. So that's what I want you to do. Click above and enjoy this!

Why the Industry Tried to Stop the Greatest Rapper of All Time - F. D. Signifier

Hopefully, what's listed above is still the title of this video. F.D. loves to change it up along with his thumbnails every so often. Either way, this is a big video essay all about Lupe Fiasco! I'm a HUGE Lupe fan, and seeing this pop up on my subscriptions was quite the treat. It's a great look into the career of the artist along with a bit of his upbringing. If you're unaware, as an emcee, Lupe Fiasco truly is one of the best to ever do it, but he's struggled to be respected in all demographics as such. This gives you the reason why, while giving him his flowers and criticisms equally. For my hip hop heads, this is for you!

Favorite Comeback
r u ok? - ifeye

There have been sooo many great comebacks this month, from kpop giants to the scene's underdogs. Though, this is one of the groups I never expected to sweep me off my feet. Ifeye debuted earlier this year and I was pleased with it. I certainly found them likable, but I didn't think they may release one of my favorite songs of the year with their follow up. R U Ok? comes with such a fun and upbeat energy that compels me to bounce from beginning to end. Then when you pair that with the choreography and their impressive presence, you've got an addictive experience. Please, oh please give these new ladies a chance and pray they don't slide into nugudom!

Favorite Album Breakdown
Nobody's Rapping like Lupe Fiasco - The Company Man

The return of The Company Man's breakdowns is all thanks to Lupe Fiasco. I'm so pleased. His insight into hip hop is so fascinating and I love it. Then when it comes to Lupe, I've been head over heels for his creative wordplay and themes. Here we get to see it broken down a bit for each track and I enjoy the analysis so much. I feel it helped me get even more out of the following listens of the album, Drill Music in Zion. If you had a tough time getting into the project, I suggest giving this a watch for a quick breakdown of the purpose of each track and then replaying it for added effect.

Favorite Music Essay
Kendrick Lamar: Deconstructing a Culture of Trauma - Quality Culture

With the release of Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, there has been many of think pieces on the album and his career in totality. I believe this video essay is one of the strongest I've seen put together. We get to see a look into how throughout Kendrick's entire tenure as a rapper has affected his mindset and goals to leave a legacy. It all boils down to the shift in demeanor presented in the latest album and this video shows us how that all makes sense. Quite the intriguing watch, if you so wish to give it a chance.

Favorite Debut
Attention - NewJeans

Now technically the official debut of the group with the release of the EP is August 1st. Yet, I must say that the promotional methods, starting in July, made this quite the interesting month. Attention was the start of this journey as they appeared out of thin air, as it seems, with fantastic reception. The throwback 90's/00's feel of it all was extremely refreshing in the midst of so many girl crush concepts 4th generation girl groups are tending to take on. Soon after a schedule was released detailing that a music video would accompany every track leading to the official release of the mini album. I was simply enthralled due to the quality of Attention and I haven't been let down since. Hype Boy, Hurt, and Cookie all made me an early stan of these girls. I only hope that some of the controversy with their young ages don't bog them down too much as they bring some of the greatest vibes to ever debut with.

Favorite Viral Video
Mooo! - Doja Cat

I've slowly become familiar with Doja Cat this month and it started with a break down of her song, "Go To Town". I soon realized that she has a fun personality who is open with her sexuality and presents it with wit. Yet, this viral video is what made me do the deep dive. If you haven't seen it yet, this really puts her carefree nature on display! It's pure fun with a bit of smart humor. As I dug deeper into her catalog, she uses that skill to talk about love, sex, and fun in a number of ways musically. If you're not offended by "crass" talk, I'd advise giving her album, Amala, a listen.

All of us here are Muddy Cult have been quite busy for a while and with a packed schedule of life's little curve balls and time being the enemy, we have quite the back log of content sitting around. I Don't Wanna Leave - Snow Tha Product

I LOVE Snow Tha Product soooo much and to see how Warner Bros barely pushed her last EP and practically shelved the second half was frustrating. Yet, that doesn't hold Snow back and this video is the proof. She's been continuing her tour life and came back with a fiery remix along with some more self-produced music videos to keep her fans happy. This particular joint right here, though, made me flip out!!! Watch and see for yourself...

Three February Reviews

Catastrophic Event Specialist - Ces Cru
(Genre: Hip Hop/Alternative Rap)

Ces Cru from Strange Music started gaining my attention every since their collaborations started on Tech N9ne's projects a while back. I eventually sold on them after their first EP on the label, 13. Their approach to rap was something I heavily enjoyed due to their respect for the craft of hip hop, while also daring to push its boundaries as well. I looked forward to this after hearing "Gridlock" from the Deluxe version of The Storm by Tech N9ne. It seemed that they were going to be even more socio-political than before and I was intrigued.

The album is split into three acts: Calamity, Entropy, & Scourge, all of which have their own lounge instrumental track to introduce the section. What follows are songs about the grind the duo partake in, hate for those who disrespect the craft, some thoughts about the political climate, & the daily struggle of life in the city. This is all over their usual style of beats that are of an alternative hip hop variety. The heavy bass is infectious while the surrounding melodies are inventive and promote the head nod effect. The ride is rather smooth as they maneuver through all the tracks with ease and lyrical prowess.

Those who still hold lyricism with high regard can find this project up to par. If subject matter has the high watermark, the few topics may need to be your cup of tea. The few songs that stray from the rap game in general like "Purge", "Gridlock", "Slave", & "Hero" bring their view on social issues and are the small reprieve from the usual topics. "Hero" is the one that may stand out as the one that is meant to have pop appeal which could turn off some due to its prevalent optimism. I personally enjoy it though, but it's not among my favorites: "Tidal Wavy" & "Metal and Flesh". Any Strange Music fan could heavily enjoy this entry, but I'd also recommend this to people who enjoy hip hop that isn't focused on radio play.

 Drogas Light - Lupe Fiasco
(Genre: Hip Hop/Alternate Rap/Trap Rap)

The dichotomy of Lupe Fiasco's album approach is polarizing. The thing that makes it interesting is the fact that Lupe knows this exists as well. Therefore, he announced that he was planning on dropping around three more projects that will separate each side of his style. Drogas Light is supposed to bring the mass appealing Lupe while the following projects, Drogas & Skulls are going to be the more complex and conceptual sides of himself. I still looked forward to it as a person who enjoyed Lasers and his tracks for the hood, despite preferring the intricate lyricism Lupe possesses.

Drogas Light certainly delivers the mainstream acceptable sound by starting off with a trap and hood anthem vibe that eventually ends with a few pop/dance joints. The songs are built to get hype to, make some social commentary, & even tell unorthodox sci-fi stories. Although this is "light" Lupe, the rhymes rarely devolve to a groan-worthy degree since it's more likely like the song's topic to be puzzling. This structure of the album can once again polarize listeners making it easy for people to easily cut tracks from their playlist.

In my opinion, I only would be one of the people cutting tracks due to some of the songs either not connecting to my taste or needing to be in the mood for certain songs. Yet, songs that definitely enter the rotation include "Dopamine Lit", "Made in the USA", "JUMP", "Kill", & "It's Not Design". I'm slightly disappointed that I wasn't able to take more away from it since I loved Tetsuo & Youth, but I can really only vibe with half of the tracklist and find "Pick Up the Phone" & "Wild Child" generic songs that I wish weren't in his catalog. I still would recommend giving this a listen to see which tracks hit you, due to its shotgun approach to popular rap music.

Loverboy - Pryde
(Genre: Contemporary R&B/Hip Hop)

From past reviews, you may know that I'm an avid fan of Pryde despite his similarities to contemporaries I don't enjoy as much. My "version of Drake" announced that he was going to release a brand new project for the ladies in February and I was curious ever since the single, "Left Field" was released. Then he proclaimed that this project would be singing-centric, so it piqued my interest even more. His past efforts toward singing hasn't been anything spectacular, but never anything I didn't abhor either.

Loverboy certainly stayed true to Pryde's claims to be focused on singing because only 2 of the nine tracks feature a rap verse. Though his singing performances still weren't particularly impressive save for "When the Lights Turn On", he still manages to carry the project over various radio ready production with songs about his woes with the girls he comes across in bad relationships (as usual). His ability to deliver these typical themes in his music are still the deciding factor of his likability, though, which I feel are similar to Drake's & Tech N9ne's problem.

I truly find this to be a jam-worthy project due to Pryde's uncanny skill to fit into any style of hip hop he sets his mind to. His genuine writing is what gives me the appeal that Drake can't, and the production of this project is top-notch as it's mainly handled by K-Beatz. My favorite, "Not Winning" is just that perfect blend of atmosphere and lyrical intent. From start to finish are palatable songs, except "West End Rebound"'s borderline "Marvin's Room" theme. Yet, I believe that you have to be in a certain mood for the slow songs "When the Lights Turn On" & "Globe". Either way, I recommend this project to any fans of PARTYNEXTDOOR, Tory Lanez, & Chris Brown.
