Quick Movie Review

The Bye Bye Man (2017, USA) | Rating: 1.5/5

Did anyone seriously think this movie was going to be good with a title like that? Aside from the premise, the previews didn't convince me that this 2017 Boogeyman was going to be worth my money to see in the theaters, but I still wanted to see it for its terribleness. Pretty much it's your usual horror fanfare with predictable jump scares, characters with little to no personality, and a lore that doesn't make sense whatsoever. Don't say it, don't think it? How does that even work? Granted this isn't the worst horror movie I've seen last year, but it does make me wonder how these unimaginative ideas get greenlit for theater release in the first place.

Fear, Inc. (2016, USA) | Rating: 2/5

Yay~ Another potentially garbage movie that Miko decided to watch from work. The low quality train is still moving. I need some laughs somewhere, right? This movie centers around a group of friends who are into horror movies and one friend decides to bring the horror to life through an agency that brings fear. Is the blood and gore purely for show or are their friends truly dropping like flies? As bad as I thought it might possibly be, it did have an interesting premise at least. Granted, I don’t think I’ll be revisiting or recommending this movie any time soon. I thought the blur of “is this fake or not” was an interesting touch and I feel like I’ll be seeing something similiar in 2018’s Game Night. I bet you’re wondering why I wouldn’t recommend or rewatch. Well, the characters weren’t really all that likable and I didn’t completely understand the purpose of Fear Inc., like their end goal. Other than that, it was fine, but surely not memorable.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016, UK) | Rating: 1/5

I really, really hope this is actually the final chapter, because, oh boy, has this series gone the ridiculous route in storytelling. I know many fans of the video game series complained in earlier installments, but it took me some time to see the quality was going down from the previous one. This hopefully final addition was by far the worst. I am far from being a fan of “Resident Evil”, in fact, I’m a “Silent Hill” fan, but I could somewhat tell that this was straying far away from its source material. If someone asked me to explain what happened in this movie, I couldn’t tell you. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a story to tell at all. There’s a sprinkle of dialogue and some watered down, monotonous action scenes that I have no idea if it actually progresses the story or not. There’s so many explosions, slow motion, shooting, and fight scenes with the undead and Umbrella that it’s really difficult to tell how they even got in that situation, especially when you include such a convoluted story with clones. I’m praying this is the end of it and maybe someone will learn that if you don’t have passion for the franchise, you might as well not adapt it to the screen.

Clown (2014, Canada) | Rating: 3.5/5

Ever since I saw Hostel, I’ve been holding my grudge and semi-hatred towards Eli Roth quite tightly. So, every time I see his name, I scrunch up my face and look away, declaring whatever he’s involved as unworthy of my time. Granted, I still kinda want to see Cabin Fever to completion. Aside from that, I normally avoid any projects with his name attached to it. The reason I bring this up is because the cover proudly displays that Mr. Roth is producer of this fine film. Well, actually, I assumed it wouldn’t be all that great, but then again directing and producing are two different things. So, what about the movie? Well, actually, it wasn’t that bad. Honestly, I wanted to watch it through a preview I saw, but Roth’s name made me a little hesitant on the quality. Similar to Tim Allen in The Santa Clause, our main character gets stuck in a clown costume and slowly becomes this clown demon. The lore attached to it is...odd, but interesting...and a little silly, but horror movie logic is something you don’t think too deep on. I was surprised to find myself genuinely enjoying it as this poor man is fighting for his identity and trying to keep his life together for his family with just the right amount of creeps and blood.

The Void (2016, Canada) | Rating: 2/5

I think the unique, throwback aesthetics is what lured me to this probably underrated flick and...I really wasn’t into it. Sad to say that as I expected something fresh and new in a genre that doesn't constantly repeat things without caring, but I just didn’t get into the story. Sure, it was interesting, but there was something that was missing for me. Then again, sci-fi is such a hit and miss genre for me in the first place. I thought the setup with the characters being stuck together in this weird situation was interesting and I enjoy some of the camera choices too. There was a decent build up, but I couldn't focus for some reason. I'm sure it deserves all the film festival praise, but I really don't have much to say to confidently recommend it. See for yourself and tell me what you think.
